The Improviser's Woodshed

The Improviser’s Woodshed is an interactive music workshop aimed at presenting exciting, challenging and inspiring musical ideas and games that are derived from improvising musicians and educators such as John Zorn, Fred Frith, Frank Zappa, R. Murray Schafer, the Sun Ra Arkestra and Charles Mingus.

The Improviser’s Woodshed is a time flexible program that can be suited to fit group/classroom size, curriculum focus, and student needs. The program works very well with musicians, dancers, and theatre artists.

The program consists of:

  1. Improviser’s warm up exercises
  2. Improvisation games
  3. An introduction to conducting skills for instant composition
  4. Discussion about improvisation.
  5. A performance and recording session.
    • Optional multi-media performance possibilities such as accompanying classic silent films or accompanying modern dancers are available.
    • Optimum session length is a full school/work day where possible.

Each of the improviser’s warm up exercises is designed to relax and focus the participants on listening, communication and joyful participation. The improviser’s games are used to inspire those involved towards discovering more about their individual and collective musical voices. The introduction to conducting skills for instant composition helps to flesh out the power of a musical improvising crew and to direct their traffic through a maze of musical possibilities. The culminating performance and recording session is a celebration of the participant’s courage, innovation and new sound creation. The recording from the workshop will stand as a snapshot that can be used as a reference by each of the participants for further investigation into their musical explorations.

The Improviser’s Woodshed was created to inspire musicians, dancers, actors and educators to new heights of musical freedom and creativity, to equip them with the confidence and skills to share their musical discoveries with others, and most importantly to have fun making music.
