The Woodchoppers Association and Jah Youssouf
Malian Musical Renegade Jah Youssouf Reunites With
the Woodchoppers Association for the 2009 Canadian Summer Music
Festival Season.
The electrifying instrumental lightning and head-spinning
vocal hurricane known as Jah Youssouf of Mali West Africa will
once again collide with the thundering, sensual grooves of Canada’s
premier improviser’s orchestra known as the WoodChopper’s
Association.
Imagine Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and Peter
Tosh fused together and spirited to Canada via Ali Farke Toure
and the Gnawa magic of Tinariwen. this is Jah Youssouf (the kamel
n’goni - hunter’s harp/ lead vocalist/ percussionist).
Imagine the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, the Talking Heads, the Congotronics
and John Zorn’s Masada filtered through a Funkadelic looking
glass, this is the WoodChopper’s Association (drums/guitars/bass/vocals/keyboards/saxophones/percussion/horns).
This volcanic mixture of trancelike ecstatic elements together
on stage ripped the roof off and brought the house down at music
festivals, in clubs and on radio broadcasts in the summer of 2007.
This unstoppable and unique tempest created by
Jah Youssouf and the WoodChopper’s has been distilled down
to its most powerful essence in all of its hip swinging, sparkling,
and soulfilled glory in the form of their debut recording “The
WoodChopper’s Association featuring Jah Youssouf”.
This uplifting recording was made at Dale Morningstar’s legendary
Gas Station studio on Toronto Island, Grange Street Sound in Guelph,
Ontario and at Bon's Cave in Toronto.
The Woodchopper’s and Jah (and special guest
ngoni virtuoso Abdoulaye Kone) will be touring Canada this summer
2009 in support of their debut disc.
The
first Sunday of each month in 2009,
the WoodChopper's Association

and participation
on March 17th at the Tranzac Club in Toronto, Canada.
It was a grand success in showing the spirit of community and cooperation
towards creating a political statement that transcends party politics
and reaches
to the heart of the matter with folks of all ages, this being that;
Canadians are by and large peaceful and kind people and we want
no part of war in our time.

About Afghanistan...On Guard For Thee
The recent shift in the nature of Canada's military activity in
the world
is a cause for concern. I'm sure many of you agree that it is very
disturbing to know that Canadian troops are both killing and being
killed.
Why is this happening? Is this the best way for us to deal with
the
problems in Afghanistan and elsewhere--especially when the military
actions are beginning to imperil the ability to deliver meaningful
aid to the country?
We must speak out about this issue. Silence is quiet complicity.
As artists we are free to give voice to ideas and feelings that
many others
are unable to express, either for political reasons, or because
they do not
know how. The 51 songs on "Afghanistan...On Guard For Thee"
mark a significant collection of new songs in the tradition of Woody
Guthrie, Pete Seeger. The styles are diverse, ranging from rock,
to roots, folk, country, and pop. The quality of the music is superb,
heartfelt, and honest. The songs reflect perspectives ranging from
biting satire to sad, humanistic reflections; together they mirror
the soul of Canadians..
All proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders, Red Cross
International, and the Developing Countries Farm Radio Network..
Please contact us if you have any questions or would like to participate
in this project..
Sincerely,
Lewis Melville
